The latest episode of Gossip Girl features a dream sequence with Blake Lively’s character, Serena Van Der Woodsen as Marilyn Monroe in a scene ripped from the movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, which is a fantastic musical by the way and also stars Jane Russell. Serena’s Marilyn loses Dan to best friend, Blair Waldorf’s Audrey Hepburn in the dream. There was a video taken on set while they were filming with commentary by Chance Crawford who plays Nate Archibald. The video has been taken down already but if you can find it, I think it’s worth watching because it’s so ridiculous and funny. The voice that Blake does at the end of the video is really weird.
She joins a long line of people to take inspiration from the famous blonde. Lindsay Lohan is another actress who likes to frequently reference Marilyn in photoshoots and often cites her as a role model. Lindsay’s latest Marilyn themed shoot is for Playboy magazine. Her cover references Playboy’s cover that featured their first American model. That cover was recreated not too long ago by the Simpsons’ Marge Simpson.
There’s also the new movie starring Michelle Williams as the actress in “My Life With Marilyn”, which has gotten pretty decent reviews. There have been numerous other movies on Marilyn including “Norma Jean and Marilyn” which starred Ashley Judd and Marilyn Monroe as two different Marilyns.
Among the celebrities in photos inspired by Marilyn are Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Naomi Watts, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, of course, Madonna (Material Girl) and the list goes on and on.
I like Marilyn. I thought she had some really great movies and she should be recognized for her work but there’s a difference between paying homage and being lazy. Girls, it’s time to bring some originality to the spin on the inspiration. Lindsay, we get it, you love Marilyn but that schtick is getting old. Grow up a little. Megan Fox had a Marilyn tattoo but she’s tried to get it removed. You could probably take a page out of her book.
