food hangups

Yesterday, they had happy hour upstairs in the management office and they had a halloween party.  One of the girls made a pumpkin cake.  She makes really good cakes.

Anyways, one of my coworkers is a very picky eater.  He won’t eat seafood because he thinks it looks like bugs.  He doesn’t like eating banana flavored things.  He doesn’t eat pumpkin because he thinks it’s weird.  And one time, Serena found him eating from the peanut butter and jelly packets so he just seems to kind of have odd eating habits.  It sounds like he should be a vegetarian but he’s not even that fond of some vegetables, which is not to say that a vegetarian will like all vegetables.

My other 2 coworkers had him try the cake but they didn’t tell him what was in it.  Serena told me that he scarfed it down and afterwards, they told him it was pumpkin.  His response was well it was Emmy’s cake, that’s why I liked it.

Which doesn’t really make much sense since not all cake tastes the same, not all cake tastes good so just because you like cake doesn’t mean you’ll like every type of cake.  He said it was the concept though.  I don’t really see the distinction.  I mean, how can you say you don’t like something if you’ve never tried it?

For me, it’s about the taste.  I’m cool with different textures.  That probably has something to do with growing up Chinese, though.  You eat a variety of things.  Texture is definitely a concept that’s present in Chinese cuisine.

But then again, I have a Taiwanese friend who refuses to eat seafood so it also just depends on the person.
