The photos above are from a shoot, styled by Carine Roitfeld for French Vogue. The model is Lara Stone, a Caucasian model who is a size 4, which in the fashion world is one of the “curvier” models. Reportedly, she has been worried about being the “fat one” instead of embracing the difference. Even with the more recent backlash against unhealthy models, thin is still in.
However, the issue today is not her size but rather that the photo shoot was done with her in blackface. The roster of models for that issue included Kate Moss, Kristen McMenamy, Yasmin Le Bon, Eva Herzigova, Claudia Schiffer, Anna Selezneva, Diane Kruger, Constance Jabloski, and Eniko Mihalik – all Caucasian models.
Even with the huge success and popularity of Italian Vogue’s all black issue in July of this year, it looks like fashion still has a long way to go towards diversity. Why shoot a Caucasian model in blackface when you could just use any number of talented African models? There’s certainly no shortage of them, that’s for sure.
